My Philosophy of Teaching Mathematics
Mathematics is very important to the classroom on a daily bases. Mathematics has been an important part of my life so far in my education, not only in mathematics classes, but also for other core classes. When in middle school I was inspired to become a teacher, not just any teacher, but a math teacher. I believe that mathematics is learned different ways by different students and teachers that can teach all of their students work the hardest at their jobs.
Being a math major has enlightened me to learn many new things about this core subject. I have learned about many new topics in mathematics, allowing me to enhance my knowledge and further my understanding in math classes. My favorite topics in mathematics are logic and probability. I believe learning about higher level mathematics has enabled me to discover new ways to teach students using different methods because of my experience. Using calculators, counting, and doing simple calculations are not all mathematics is composed of; mathematics is about making connections to the real world. Mathematical thinking is knowing how to accomplish something using critical thinking skills and comprehension.
To reach students who have a difficulty in math, using different methods of teaching mathematics must be incorporated, there are different types of learners; therefore, not all students learn the same way. As a teacher, I will always teach using different methods: informal instruction, direct instruction, inquiry-based learning, and cooperative learning. Using these different methods, I will be able to teach students using at least one method that they will understand. The problem-solving skills I have gained as a mathematics major will help me to identify which methods work for certain students in my classroom.
As a math major going into the education field, I believe I am a very unique individual. In my classroom, utilizing different styles of learning and showing mathematics can be used in real world applications; will give my all of my students the opportunity to become a successful mathematician in both the classroom and the world ahead of them.
